Walters State Community College of Morristown is planning to celebrate the 100th birthday of Appalachian author Mildred Haun with the inaugural “Mildred Haun Conference: Celebrating the Literature, Culture and Scholarship of Appalachia” Feb. 4-5. The emphasis of this year’s conference is “Claiming and Embracing Our Own.”
Haun’s novel, “The Hawk’s Done Gone,” received critical acclaim nationally. The book is considered by many to be quintessential Appalachian fiction. With a “Granny” midwife serving as narrator, Haun introduces us to many mountain characters who lived their lives isolated from anything beyond their mountain home.
