Finding a letter like this just takes one's breath away. Ida McCollum Collins James in Texas is writing her cousin Ida Depew Ferguson in Kentucky and telling what she remembers of their family. It seems hard to read at first, but gets better as you accustom yourself to her handwriting.
This letter was given to me many years ago by my husband's grandmother, and it was the day she told me about Melungeons. I was 19 years old, so it has been awhile. :-)
Both ladies were born and raised in Hancock County, TN.
These old letters are priceless, it is worth the time to look for them in your family, even if the memory of the writer may not be hundred percent accurate. Or they may be!
